The Monastery of Agios Georgios

This Byzantine monastery stands within the castle and dominates imperiously the Hora , capital of Skyros.  It was built in the 10th century and since the Middle Ages, the Monastery belongs to the Megisti LAVRA Monastery of Mount Athos.1/5 of the island’s plots belong to Megisti Lavra,  being a gift of the Byzantine emperor N. Fokas following their victory upon the Arabs.

The main church of Saint-George was probably built in the 17th century , as indicates the marble sign on the bell tower.  Since, it  constitutes an important place of pilgrimage in Greece.

In 2001, serious damages occurred in the monastery from an earthquake and remained closed until 2015.Being completely renovated, the monastery opened again for visit.  Since 1993,its sole inhabitant is the prior archimandrite Gerontios ,who strives restlessly to revive the historical pilgrimage.
